PRP is an injection of your body's own platelets and growth factors that helps your body heal naturally. Dr. Lambeth will see you for a consultation to evaluate your injury and discuss the treatment plan. On the day of the injection, she will collect your blood and use a machine to separate the platelets and growth factors. She will use ultrasound or x-ray guidance to inject these platelets and growth factors into the injured tendon or joint.
PRP can treat partial tendon or ligament tears and mild to moderate osteoarthritis.
PRP has been shown to help reduce pain, improve function, and slow down the loss of cartilage. Steroids can reduce pain in the short term but long term use can actually damage tendons and cartilage. PRP has also been shown to provide longer lasting relief than steroids.
Dr. Lambeth believes that PRP is the most helpful when it is combined with guided rehabilitation, nutritional recommendations, and lifestyle modifications to optimize your recovery. Many physicians inject PRP, but current studies show that unless your are receiving the appropriate dose of platelets, you may not get optimal results.
Insurance does not currently cover PRP but we can provide you with a price estimate.
